The RS-232 Shield uses the popular MAX232 line driver and receiver to provide a proper serial interface with your Uno compatible development board.
The built-in 9-pin Serial port readily interfaces with traditional serial hardware, allowing you to connect your Uno to computer terminals, modems, precision test equipment, and other RS-232-based equipment.
This shield is available as either a Terminal or Modem device, and each is available with the placement of the port on either the front or back of the Arduino for convenience.
• DTE (Terminal) devices are suitable as hosts for connecting to modems, printers, and other devices.
• DCE (Modem) devices are suitable as peripherals, connecting to terminals or computers.
